Jay-Z performs last of 7 concerts in day

He is truly a man of FIRSTs. This is amazing!!!
    ----------------------------------------------------------

ABOARD JAY-Z'S JET - Jay-Z celebrated his return to the game with a seemingly impossible trek: seven 30-minute concerts around the country in 24 hours. He hit up Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, and finished in Las Vegas early Sunday. The Associated Press was along for the ride with the recently unretired rapper, whose comeback album, "Kingdom Come," will be released Tuesday.
    ___

5:15 a.m. EST - This is a time when if you're a hip-hop star and one of the biggest celebrities in the world, you may be heading home from an exclusive private club or an after-hours A-list party. This is not the time when you start preparing for a concert.

But at this ungodly hour, Jay-Z is getting ready for the first in a series of concerts spanning both coasts - in a single day.

The first stop is Atlanta, where Hova was scheduled to give a concert at 6 a.m., when most people haven't eaten their breakfast. The last stop is Las Vegas at 3 a.m. Sunday.

How will the Jigga Man do it?

    ___

6:15 a.m. EST - After waiting around for a bit, Jay-Z comes downstairs and we're ready to go. We load in the car. Among the entourage are an MTV crew and Jay-Z's main sidekick, Memphis Bleek. When asked how the crew rolls, Memphis Bleek jokes, "We roll tired."

The energy kicks up as we head to Atlanta's Centerstage for the first concert. There are at least 100 people waiting outside - they will not get in. There are a hundred more inside, already hyped for the early morning performance. Did these people even go home?

Jay-Z hits the stage, and the crowd flashes diamond signs. "ATL, what's up?" Jay-Z says as he launches into a series of his hits, the crowd jumping along the way.

"First of all, y'all crazy," Jay-Z says to the crowd. "I know I'm already crazy. But y'all crazy."

He performs for about 30 minutes before leaving and hopping into a car escorted by police motorcade and loading into a luxury jet.

    Next stop, Philly.

    ___

7:45 a.m. EST - The road trip has officially begun. Instead of a car, a G5 is the official caravan - a luxurious jet with cream-colored leather seats, a couple of couches and a wood table. There's no safety demonstration, apparently assuming that when you're on the G5, you're not going to crash. And if it does, hey, you're with Jay-Z, what better way to go?

Jay-Z relaxes on board, sunglasses still on, stretching out. But there won't be much rest on this leg. MTV personality Sway begins to talk to Jay-Z about the end of his retirement. Phrases like "
Michael Jordan" and "comeback" are used. Certainly it's an apt analogy. Jay-Z has long been the MVP of the rap game, and his departure a couple years back left hip hop lagging in superstars, like when Jordan hung up his No. 23 jersey.

    ___

9:45 a.m. EST - Jay-Z's superstar status is in full effect as he arrives in Philadelphia for show No. 2, and it's not even 10 a.m. Once again, the venue is packed with hundreds of fans and the mere sight of the rapper gets the crowd riled up - so much so that Jay-Z doesn't even need to recite a verse from "Big Pimpin'" - the crowd does it for him. It's a raucous performance.

Outside, two women are pleading to get a picture with Jay-Z. One is wearing stiletto heels, a tight skirt and a low-cut shirt.

As Jay-Z leaves the venue, one of the women bangs on a chain link fence and screams at him: "Jay-Z! Jay-Z! I'm your No. 1 fan!"

    ___

12:30 p.m. EST - The hardest part about the tour so far? Keeping together the multi-car motorcade, which now includes a few contest winners picked up along the way in each city to enjoy a day in the life of Jay.

(There are also two jets to carry the load. For the Philly to D.C. trip, the AP jumped on the second jet, almost as luxurious, just no Jay - but safety directions this time.)

In each city, the motorcade attempts to create a consistent single line, led by a police car, but is occasionally disrupted by the random clueless driver who cuts in, unaware he or she has just intermingled with a superstar's motorcade.

The ride to the next stop, Howard University, is long and occasionally choppy. Things get a little chaotic once we arrive on campus. Almost 100 students are already awaiting the motorcade. At the stage where he is performing, about 1,500 students are eagerly awaiting the Hova. A marching band plays on the sidelines.

Once the concert begins, the crowd raps along to both his old hits and his unreleased material. Jigga acknowledges this is a download world and tells the crowd, "I know y'all already downloaded it ... but y'all gotta go and pick up the album on Tuesday.'

    ___

4:15 p.m. EST - If there's a wall for Jay-Z to hit, he knows what leg it will happen on. "Chicago," he told the AP aboard his jet. But so far, Jay Z - who flew into Atlanta early Saturday morning - shows no sign of fatigue. He's changed the color of the hoodie (now white) for his NYC performance, but that's about all that's changed.

Jay Z still has the same energy he had at 6 a.m., maybe because he performed for his hometown. It looks as if more than 2,000 people have shown this time, at a pier off Manhattan's West Side highway. "We started at 6 o'clock in the morning," Jay Z told the crowd, adding that each crowd was more energetic than the next. "Now we're in New York (expletive) City, so this gotta be the livest show yet," he said before launching into one of his new songs, "30 Something."

    ___

8:30 p.m. EST - If Jay-Z hit the wall, he's certainly not showing it. When he arrives at the Riviera in Chicago, he's as animated as ever, pumping up the crowd, from the first line of the song, "Kingdom Come." It is the only venue so far that is not packed to capacity, though it is almost full. There's a little bit of breathing room for the fans, unlike the shoulder-to-shoulder experiences of the past two cities.

Whether Jay-Z took a cat nap or drank some Red Bull from New York to Chicago is unknown; the AP was unceremoniously booted to a third plane to accommodate the growing entourage. Wait a second - did we use the term "unceremoniously booted" to describe flying in a luxury jet with gourmet sandwiches and bon bons simply because we were not sitting next to Jay-Z? Clearly living the life of luxury has gone to our heads; and we've only been doing it for a few hours.

    ___

1:45 a.m. EST - We arrived in Los Angeles early. Everyone was tired. Even Memphis Bleek, the wisecracking comedian for much of the trip, has stopped making jokes and is sitting in the car, eyes half closed, waiting for us to head to the Wiltern, the last stop. The radio blares, advertising free tickets to another appearance in Los Angeles later in the week.

Everyone seems exhausted - well, make that almost everybody. "Y'all don't feel the California weather," says MTV personality Sway, standing outside our car in the balmy L.A. weather. "I'm rejuvenated."

Soon, very soon, we head off. Everyone heads off in their cars - Jay-Z is in a separate car - when inexplicably we stop at a hotel bar. It seems we are too early for our L.A. gig and have time to kill. So Jay-Z saddles up to the bar and orders drinks for the entire crew, and the bartenders switch on ESPN so he can get an update on the Michigan-Ohio State football game. A few minutes later, a toast is made for everyone for surviving this far.

    ___

3:15 a.m. EST - We've been traveling with growing security all day, but this is the first time we've actually needed it. At the Wiltern, soon after J-Zay begins his set, someone jumps onstage - not a good idea. He's immediately accosted, pinned down and thrown out of the building.

But who cares about a deranged fan - Beyonce is here. Dressed in a black babydoll dress, black leggings and heels, she looks stunning as always. She doesn't get onstage to recreate any of the hits she's had with her famous boyfriend. Instead, she and Destiny's Child member
Michelle Williams are offside to the stage, dancing along with the rest of the crowd to "Diamonds in the Air."

    ___

6 a.m. EDT - Last stop, Vegas. The city is sparkling as Jay-Z and friends touch down for the final destination. The last performce is to be at club Tao, and everyone's energy level is back to 100 percent. Memphis Bleek is cracking jokes again and making plans for a betting table after the show.

Unfortunately, the last bash was the one the AP couldn't see. The crush of humanity was so intense that even though we were behind Jay-Z, we got separated in the mash of the crowd and had to retreat to a safe haven - the backstage VIP area.

We missed perhaps the best show of the night. Although we couldn't see, we could hear Jay-Z perform bonus songs such as "99 Problems," which was not on the set list for the rest of the shows. We can only imagine how wild things have gotten inside the venue. But whatever happens, it can't be as crazy as the past 24 hours: seven cities, one day and one superstar - Jay-Z.

    Background:
    New York Times
Three men were arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court yesterday on grand larceny charges in a blackmail case involving a videotape that a lawyer said showed an altercation between a National Basketball Association player and a rapper in a New York club. Prosecutors said Santos Joubert and Jason Pabon of the Bronx and Rodrigo Sanchez of New Jersey had asked the player, Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets, for $3 million for the video, which was recorded in September by a surveillance camera at Babalu, a Manhattan nightclub. The tape showed Mr. Anthony in an altercation with a rapper known as Sugar Ray (who dat yall?) , said Larry Bronson, the lawyer for Mr. Sanchez. The lawyers indicated they would fight the charges. Sabrina Tavernise (NYT)

    Whats ghood with him:
His latest project is "Prison Ball," a documentary he bankrolled (with a six-figure check) and narrates. The haunting film, which he hopes to premiere during All-Star weekend, profiles some imprisoned ballers and explores the forces that drive dysfunction in urban neighborhoods. But it also questions the wisdom of giving hard time to two-bit dealers. "America has spent over $900,000,000,000 on the war on drugs," one full-screen shot declares. "Drugs are just as available today as they have ever been."

MS takes on iPod via indie music

Microsoft is turning to indie music fans as a potential means of dethroning Apple's iPod in the digital music industry. The company is preparing to ship its Zune portable media player on November 14th, and hopes to gain a large following from indie music lovers prior to that date. Bloomberg reports that the Redmond-based company recently invited six well-known individuals from the indie music scene to test drive its forthcoming Zune player, but responses from indie bloggers likely fell short of Microsoft's expectations. "It's really not anything that impressive," said blogger Craig Lile, an Indianapolis-based Web developer who was invited to Microsoft's preview of the Zune player. "They're going to do terribly, at least in the demographic that cares about indie music. Apple is so entrenched in the indie music community.'" Microsoft hopes to break Apple's digital music dominance by appealing to key Web reviewers like Lile, and by sponsoring band tours to attract indie music fans.

    SCARY

According to data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau, the ratio of men to women in Maryland is among the lowest in the nation, with fewer than 93 men for every 100 women here. Only the District of Columbia and Mississippi have more lopsided gender ratios. Looking for the best odds to find a man? Try Alaska, with its 103 men to every 100 women - some towns, with up to 120 men per 100 women, have even tried to recruit women to move there.

Maryland might be off-kilter, experts say, because its economy is more friendly to women, particularly the many government office jobs in Baltimore County and the Washington suburbs.

Others posit the theory that the numbers could be traced to the fact that African-American women typically outnumber African-American men and Maryland has one of the country's highest percentages of African-American residents. The disparity between the total number of men and women in the state has been noted for the past few years.

"This is more than a curiosity," said Martha Farnsworth Riche, former director of the U.S. Census Bureau and a fellow with Cornell University's Center for the Study of Economy and Society. "This is something policy-makers need to think about. This has a long-term effect on the economy, the education system."

Of course, what concerns many women is the so-called marriage market.

In Maryland, according to an analysis of the new census information, unmarried men slightly outnumber unmarried women in the 20-to-34 age bracket - prime marriage territory - but from 35 on, unmarried women outnumber unmarried men by a greater and greater margin until after age 65, when there are nearly four unmarried women for every unmarried man in Maryland.

"It definitely puts women at a disadvantage," said Jillian Straus, author of Unhooked Generation: The Truth About Why We're Still Single, published in February by Hyperion Books. "Unfortunately, if you're a woman, there's a lot more competition out there."

    THE RAW REPORT

Sorry this is so late. Been a lil busy lately and posting has become a lil difficult. I'll figure out something .....

I attended the Shellbe Raw Mixtape Release event last Saturday at the 5 Seasons. The entire A.R.S. team worked very hard to make this event special & THEY SUCCEEDED!!! Special shout out to Shellbe Raw, Niige, Ogun, Mike Mc Intosh, DJ Radio n dem!!!!

The vibe of the 5 was very nice and inviting. Many of the tables were decorated really nice with table clothes and balloons. You all proved that with just a lil extra effort....you can make something familiar -
Fresh and New! Place looked great! Really festive!!!

It was great to see so many women in the spot enjoying themselves and it actually looked like the guys pulled out an iron for the evening. Rockwell....was up in there with his pimp hat.
    *
I didn't get the chance to eat, but there was a West Indian buffet set up in the V.I.P. Smelled delicious!!! There is truly something about West Indian food that really gets a party going....LOL! Maybe its the spices....that in turn makes you drink....that in turn makes you dance....more drinking....more dancing - LET'S HAVE A PARTAY!!! Amotion from Deep Flow TV got some footage of me gettin particularly Crunk to Skarr's song "Bang"......giiiiiiirl, please don't use it!!! LOL! I was havin fun!

Did I mention DJ Boo Man was on the wheels? Yes!!! Mr. 1/3 of the 410 Pharaohs (PERFORMING LIVE @ SONAR 11/29/06 along with SHELLBE RAW, RAW DOC & MANY MORE!!!)
    He did the damn thang!

The release event was more of a party than a show. The atmosphere was more of a celebration than obligation to attend...that was REFRESHING!!!

Shellbe took the stage backed by her A.R.S. fam and many of the other artists with whom she has collaborations. Who ever did her makeup did a great job. The sparkle around her eyes kept catching the light in a most attractive fashion (lol! did that sound lezbo? Well...ish was tight!). I love make up! I own a bunch and I am always looking for new ways to work it. Don't hate!

Most of the songs had a real laid back vibe to them....or maybe I was just living in slow motion...LOL! The crowd seemed to really enjoy the new material. At one point in the evening she performed a tribute to her dad that really showed an introspective side to the usually aggressive and assertive RAW. Her mom was in attendance as well.

This night was truly a family affair.

Keep defying the odds...keep on making the haters attack (not calling any one in particular a hater)...keep on showing the new comers as well as the vets what promoting is about...keep on charting your own course.
Take another bow! You deserve it.

When things didn't work out with Nicole "Hoopz" Alexander, who won the first season of his hit VH1 reality show, Flav resumed an "on and off" relationship with the baby-to-be's mother -- "hence, the conception," Johnson said. The baby is due in early January, he said.

Johnson would not reveal the mother's identity.

Deelishis (real name London Charles), whom Flav chose in the recent second-season finale of "Flavor of Love," is reportedly standing by her man.

"She understands that this is definitely something prior to her involvement on the show and her involvement with Flav, and she says she supports him regardless," Johnson said.

Flavor Flav (real name William Drayton Jr.), 47, founded the hip-hop group Public Enemy in the '80s. He found fame anew in 2004 on the third season of VH1's "The Surreal Life." He has since starred in the network's "Strange Love" and "Flavor of Love."

Speaking of my Gurl Delish (I am happy she won)...............

According to rumor, Deelishis and Busta Rhymes looked like a couple Saturday night at some random club? Hmmmm....I wasn't there, but I know for a fact that she popped up on the red carpet with Flavor Flav. I hope Busta ain't trying to pay Flav back for eating that KFC on VH1. You know Chuck D gave Busta his name, right?

    I love that ILLSEED dude............

BALTIMORE HAVING THE BEST YEAR EVER!!!

Of course, the New York Times, in their quest for hipness, has gotten on the train and written their own article about Baltimore. And non-Baltimore club hip-hop is set to blow up. I've been feelin' Baltimore Club ever since I heard "There's Some Ho's In This House," when I was living in North Carolina, but I'm definitely going to check Baltimore hip-hop. Diablo, who's mentioned in the article is gonna be on the names of all the New York hipters now. I'm feelin' his tracks but don't know much about him. This particular track is from the Hampsterdam to Hollywood mixtape. If you don't know about Hampsterdam, then you havn't been watching The Wire.

    A groundbreaking tribute
King's enduring legacy draws politicians, activists, celebrities

    Speaking of marriage ...
Rumors flew Friday that Beyonce and Jay-Z were about to tie the knot in Antigua or some other warm, tropical spot. This didn't happen. But I'm surprised by the cynicism attendant on this long-running romance. "It's all for publicity," I've been told more than once.

Well, neither performer talks much about love. They are discreet and respectful of their privacy. This creates a desperate vacuum for a media used to celebrities who yak and yak about their undying devotion -- and within this vacuum, rumor and suspicion breed.

They sure look sincere whenever photographed!

Since he's on the brain.......thought you might like to know.... Cingular Music is sponsoring The Jay-Z Hangar Tour ...which is coming to the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall THIS SUNDAY!!! They say its being held at a secret location, but then they say GET YOU TICKETS TODAY on the radio!!! what's the dealy yo?

Lemme know if you agree or disagree with their assessment of Charm City.

    where hip-hop lives
    *
The music thrives in the heartland and in smaller cities, away from the major labels and their video budgets. Can you pick the next Houston?
    *
    (c) 2006, Rolling Stone. First published in ROLLING STONE (r) Magazine. Distributed by Tribune Media Services.
    *
Baltimore Sound. Baltimore club - a hyperkinetic style that combines breakneck beats, pop-culture snippets and spastic MCs - has started to spread outside the Charm City's limits.
    *
Hot Spots. The city's top MCs and beatmakers record at Deep Flow Studios, which doubles as a record store; Club Choices is the premier spot for Baltimore club; Five Seasons hosts MC battles.
    *
Scenemaker. Darkroom Productions dropped 2005's Hamsterdam Volume 1 mix CD, named after an episode of HBO's B'more hit The Wire, whose producers licensed seven songs for the new season. Locals Bossman and Paula Campbell have each been signed to majors.
    *
Dance. Baltimore club spawned the frantic, feet-shuffling fury of the Sponge Bob dance.
    *
Must-have. Big, buggy Stunna shades; T-shirts airbrushed with signs from your street corner; weed, Ecstasy and Grey Goose.
    *
Mix tape. Hamsterdam 2 out in November.
    -- Evan Serpick
    *
Chicago Sound. An emphasis on lyrics that dates back to Twista. "When they had national MC competitions, somebody from Chicago would win every year," says Tony Fields of All Natural Records.
    *
Hot Spots. The city's skate-rap scene centers around the Uprise Skate Shop, which appeared in Lupe Fiasco's "Kick, Push" video; 606 Entertainment throws the hottest open-mike nights.
    *
Scenemaker. Kanye West, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Rhymefest and local heroes like battle champ Juice, Mass Hysteria and female MC Psalm One; mix-tape guru 5ifth Element; local labels Molemen and All Natural.
    *
Dance. Go straight to YouTube and check out some examples of juking - Chicago's answer to L.A.'s krumping. Must-have. Skateboards and custom sneakers - Fiasco has his own line of Reeboks. Mix tape. 5ifth Element, Soul Wunderful Vol. 1.
    *
    -- Evan Serpick
    *
Memphis Sound. A mix of chanted choruses and heavy synthesizers that locals call buck, with an unmistakable underlying blues influence.
    *
Hot Spots. Strip club Platinum Rose features "the best mix of white and black bitches anywhere," according to 8Ball of 8Ball and MJG.
    *
Scenemaker. Oscar winners Three 6 Mafia - and prot?g?s Frayser Boy, Project Pat and Lil Wyte - are the biggest game in town, but veteran duo 8Ball and MJG are local heroes. "Memphis is the original home of blues," says 8Ball. "Even when we get 'buck,' you can feel the soul." The hottest young rapper is Yo Gotti.
    *
Dance. A dance called the gangsta walk has been Memphis' homegrown version of break dancing since the 1990s.
    *
Must-have. If you're rolling toward Beale Street, box Chevys - dating from the Seventies to the early Eighties - are the wheels to have.
    *
Mix tape. DJ Drama and Yo Gotti, "I Told U So"
    -- Matt Barone
    *
    Miami Sound.
Bass-heavy, clubcentric production, topped with feel-good subject matter.
    *
Hot Spots. Hip-hoppers (and Lindsay Lohan) hit Opium Garden and Mansion at night, and buy their sneakers at Shoe Gallery.
    *
Scenemaker. Diddy, Fat Joe and Lil Wayne all have homes in the M-I-A, but the natives still run the show. Dominating the scene is Slip-N-Slide Records, which includes Trick Daddy, Trina and Rick Ross. Other players in the 305: producers Scott Storch, Cool and Dre, rapper Pitbull.
    *
Dance. Nothing too trendy this year, but fake Latin moves and bass-music-inspired booty clapping are timeless. Must-have. Everybody drives a donk, or old-school Chevy, hopefully not after they drink an Everglow, a combo of tequila and vodka.
    *
Mix tape. DJ Drama and Plies, From The Bottom To The Top.
    -- Mark Binelli
    *
San Diego Sound. A set-claiming, sign-throwing update on N.W.A-era gangsta rap, often with Mexican slang and mariachi/ranchera samples blended in.
    *
Hot Spots. The Gaslamp district of bars and clubs is the center of gravity for San Diego hip-hop nightlife; performers also frequent venues such as Chuey's and 4th & B.
    *
Scenemaker. With Tijuana only eighteen miles away, the hip-hop population in "the Dago" is largely Mexican. Acts such as Lil Uno, Lil Al and Low Profile Gangsters are staples of the Chicano scene, but the current front-runner is Lil Rob. "I've been put down for trying to use my slang on radio," says Rob, "so making them respect the Mexican side is San Diego's hurdle."
    *
Dance. "Gangstas don't dance," says Lil Rob, jokingly adding, "but I think we might need one." Must-have. The car: a 1957-'63 Impala with thirteen-inch Dayton rims and hydraulic pumps. The drinks, according to Rob: PATR-N tequila and Mexican beers such as Corona and Dos Equis.
    *
Mix tape. DJ Warrior and Mitchy Slick, Cali Untouchable Radio 13: Dago Edition.
    *
    -- Mark Binelli
