Daaaaaaaaarrn, Barnes! |
FBI agents and police found Street Official recording artist, Barnes [Marcus Conaway], staying with family and friends in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia while promoting his CD, " The Last Shall Be First" released in April. Apparently, he has been on the run the last couple of months stemming from his alleged involvement in a murder...this saga also in some kind of way involves his label mates "High & Pistols".....It is real real deep ova that way. The SO camp has yet to release a statement via their website or Barnes' MYSPACE page. This situation is waaaay deeper than the average daily blah blah blah.....I will pray for the souls of everyone involved in this sorted tale. Dang! I had just found this article about him that I was ready to share & now this.... WTF? If ever you needed a reason to go out and cop that man's CD....NOW you have a big one...he is gonna need every penny he can get. This is another one of those situations that makes me really sit and ponder..... WHAT THE HELL ARE WE GONNA DO WITHOUT JOHNNY COCHRAN?

We've come so far .....yet we are still sooooo far away |
Okkkkkaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!! I said I was gonna talk about this after the show. Let's ALL take a second and ponder this picture. Who amongst us finds this offensive?....speak up or for ever be a p*ssy. The show was called "In the Field" ....they was in the field for real! Ogun said that quite a few people looked at him puzzled when they flipped the flyer over...LOL! I can see why alot of people wouldn't know how to take it.....but I got the symbolism. Perhaps, that too is an Aquarian thing. Please note: I was not consulted in the making of this flyer. All of my comments are made purly because I love pontificating publicly. The funny part was that he gave me a stack of flyers and told me to make sure I put them face down...LOL! as if people weren't going to turn them over. Folk not familiar with Baltimore Hip Hop prolly thought it was for an art exibit or something. It's all good tho...the word of mouth from this last event will surly get folk to come out for the next show in the series. * I would bet my bottom dollar .....the next "In the Field flyer" will be faaaaar less controversial. .....check me out on MYSPACE @ www.myspace.com/clove aaaaaaaaaiiiight! |

Mixtape Madness |
USA Today wrote a very interesting peice on the Mixtape game. I never realized how lucrative it can be for those that are in it to win it. Some will say," DJs make the world go round".... What do yoooou think? Sure sounds like they have a lot of power if you ask me. This game is so serious ......"A Whoo Kid mixtape can sell about 100,000 copies. These CDs sell mostly at independent record stores around the country (more prevalent in big cities like Philadelphia and New York) and on Web sites." WOW! * Be sure you check me out on MYSPACE @ www.myspace.com/clove |

The time is NOW! |
For those of you that missed it....I am here to tell ya...You missed a great show. I wish more of you folk that cry about the lack of venues would get it through your heads that if you don't support events in their infancy...they can never develop into the "PLACE TO BE". Everyone wants to holla out, "its a movement"...well..how can there be a movement if people don't support events and functions organized in their honor? Not only that, but giving events are expensive [financially, emotionally and physically]....so anybody that gives an event typically does it for the love and NEVER because their is a guarantee to make money. * The very first "In the Field" concert, held this past Wednesday at the K-Productions in the Northwood Shopping Center featured a great line up. There were so many local notables in the building....& it was especially nice to see some West side people come over East. FYI: Baltimore is a very segreated city...folk generally live and perform all of their daily operations on their own side of town. When giving an event in Baltimore, like real estate...LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION is everything. You really have to be a well respected person to bring N.E.W.S. to one spot that isn't centrally located (i.e. 5 Seasons). Big Ups, Ogun! * All of the performers showed up and really gave us all a great show. The ladies of Golden Seal came with their own GS t-shirt wearing entourage'. I looooove the tank tops ladies...when I get some paper...I have gots to get one. Shellbe Raw, Skarr Akbar and N.O.M. Click all gave very energetic performances that had the crowd on their feet during their whole sets..despite minor lighting and sound glitches...especially during Shellbe Raw's set. The Unstoppable Knuckleheads got up and did their thing also. These guys have their own style which is pretty much unlike anything I've ever seen before. They are like rapping Punk Rockers...LOL! & they know it! They always look like they are having such a great time and that is the first sign of a person that is doing what they love. * I need to rant for a minute: I wasn't really in the mood to be out on Wednesday [.], but Ogun asked if I could work the door for him and I reluctantly agreed. Tryna help a brotha out!!! So not only was my spirit all wrong for the evening, but I HAD to do something I HATE doing....ASKING FOR MONEY!!! ...I hate being the one to ask people for anything - for real for real. Don't know why but I conversations about money make me feel uncomfortable [come to think of it]...especially when I don't have any..he he! or we aren't discussing how I'ma get some. * What was worse than sitting at the door asking people for money was the fact that he didn't have an established door list and he told me everyone else was to pay. Shuuuuuugs don't tell me everyone has to pay....that means EVERYONE pays. But of course...this didn't go smoothly either. All night, "Did they pay?"....."why did you let them walk past you?"....& on more than one occasions.....he came up to me and was like, "Ooooh...they're are ok...my bad" uuuuuuuuuughhhhhhhhhh! wtf? my bad?? I felt like a real herb and I didn't appreciate that. So...that being said... I'm puttin erebody on notice.......I don't even work my own door..........DON'T ASK. * Aquarius' are some fickle people....when we are mentally somewhere else...you might as well be talking to the wall. I hear ya, but I dont hear ya. Jah-Li, XO and quite a few other people tried to come up to me and make me smile...THANK YOU, GUYS!!!!, but there really wasn't much you could do. Sistah gurl is just a lil burnt out from the whole hip hop grind....I need a mental vacation. *
Had the opportunity to sit and talk with the brothers of the Soulvivaz Nation. Their new CD "Unify or Die", produced exclusively by a new up and comer, Top Secret, offers that balance that I am always saying is missing from today's rap music. Baltimore's hip hop movement will manifest itself in more ways than one - get ready!!! Yeah...we got that street ish, but we also have some positive vibes for the people as well. Our city truly has a lot to offer the world. Big BIG BIG things are in the works.....please stay tuned. When you get a chance, check out the excerpt from the recent article the Baltimore Sun ran on them. Big Ups to the [Take Action Network] for providing the link. Thank you Jabari and Sundiata for showing a sistah so much love and respect. I soooo look forward to making some things happen!!! *

Avant - Director [Im glad to see he's back, but what the hell kind of album title is that???] 5. Rihanna - A Girl Like Me [This is a "middle finger" to all you people that thought she was a 1 hit wonder. Pon da replay!] 6. Rascal Flatts - Me and My Gang 7. Soundtrack - High School Musical 8. The writing is on the wall$ |
The first step in correcting any problem is to address it!!! Big Ups to Ahk (Strictly Hip Hop - MSU 88.9 FM) for organizing the first series of much needed roundtable discussions on the state of Hip Hop in Baltimore [Sat. 4.29.06]. My panel was (IMO) the LIVEST .... although we didn't get to do too much talkin on air...Thank Lil Mic for that [sike up, buddy!!!] * Ray Lugar & Low Key God of Team Fifty [pictured: straw hat], Labtekwon [pictured: blk shirt], MullyMan [pictured: brown shirt] & A-Milz, J-Funk & his sons.....& ME all in one lil azz room for like 4 hours embrawled in one of the most heated discussions I've had in a very long time. Labtekwon and I went at it for like 2 hours....that was fun! A great debate ALWAYS invigorates me! Numerous factors were discussed, but one of the most prevailing issues identified was the lack of quality venues for established artists. Big Ups to the 5 Seasons for showing the Hip Hop community so much love. Your willingness to "try something different" has meant so much to the growth and development of many of our up and coming performers...but where can people go to see all of the Hottest...not just those pushing their first mixtape? Another topic of discussion was the lack of fans for baltimore Hip Hop. Unfortunately, most of the people that currently attend shows are supporters [i.e. other artists or family & friends of performers]...SUPPORTERS are wonderful..don't get me wrong, but we were all in agreement that the lack of "customers" is one of the many things that continues to cripple the movement's progress. * The writing is on the wall$....BALTIMORE HIP HOP is on the come up, but we must all remain mindful of playing our part. Do you even understand your part? I am committed to using this blog as well as my other resources to highlight the wealth of talent we have in this city. I started this online journal as a way to express myself freely about things that matter to me. Yes my motives were self-centered!!! But since I began, I have found that many people rely on this and blogs like Gov't Names for all of their Bmore Hip Hop related news & because of that....I am starting to recognize this for the "jewel" that it could be. I feel honored to be part of history in the making. Some people may feel like I intentionally neglect to mention them, but that couldn't be further from the truth. There are MAAD people that I got ALOT of love for and that love me equally [on some beyond music ish] and they have yet to be mentioned at length and they don't give me any flack about it. Soooo that being said....if you never even ask me how am I doing.....why do you think your CD or show would be a priority to me? I am only human and this is not the Baltimore Sun. Wait a min.. the Sun ain't showing no body no love...he he! why you ain't mad at them? If you want to be relevant...you must work on forming relationships with people. This is not just the case here, but everywhere. * If you know of an interesting story or exciting upcoming event...or if you are a blogger and wish to do a link exchange ... email me @ synergizehiphop@yahoo.com. * Also on Saturday....I attended the Baltimore debut of Blood on the Wall$. Check out the city paper article, High Variety, which discusses a few of the films that were shown at the JHU Film Festival, including BOTW$. I want to send a special shout out to my mother [Nana Aabena], Ogun [whom I cussed out earlier that day and he still came], OOH of Brown F.I.S.H. [who woke up from a deep sleep to come out] and Missy aka Mz. "B'More Happenings" for coming out to support me on this most exciting occassion. I don't need a lot of friends....just give me a few real ones anyday. I got yall back all day long!!! Also, I want to once again thank Larry Scott and BMC for the opportunity to work with you. This has proved to be a truly rewarding experience. And in semi-related news...come to find out BMC's sons are MCs & producers [Sparkplug Entertainment]. They hit me off with a single [J. Lynn - "It's Over"]....I will be back with a review. They didn't provide me with a MYSPACE page or website address, but I'm sure they have one. I'll be back with some more details.
* Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! I'm on MYSPACE too! * oooooOH YEAH! They showed Stop Snitchin at the JHU Film Festival [ of all places] & go gobs of people were lined up to see it...Not sure why, but that pissed me off! |

What chu know bout daaaaat...I know all about daaaat! |
I ask that you all to join me in a round of applause for Ms. Shellbe Raw for her recent profile, "RAW NERVE" in the Baltimore City Paper. Shellbe, now folk are gonna ALWAYS expect you to be on top of your game. Im sure you'll be able to handle it tho! * I think you touched upon some really great issues and really expressed the heartfelt sentiments of many up and coming performers. I applaud you for being so open and fourthcoming - the truth will always set you free. Word of advice: get ready for fan mail.....& some may not be the kind you want...LOL! With the ghood always comes a lil bad. My city paper picture/article has netted me a whole slew of NEW male admirers..... Be careful, girl!!! In fact, one coudn't contain his "genuine love and affection" for me any longer ...so he wrote me a letter before he got out of prison.....droppin quotes from the article ...actin like he knew me from back in the day. I kept that letter in case I ever pop up missing....he goes up for parole in November [2006]. * All the seeds you planted are starting to root....doesn't it feel nice to see the little sprouts coming up out the ground. Buuuut don't make the mistake of just sitting in your garden and smelling the roses...be proactive [with an "e"... not the bump cream]....& periodically prune for weeds ....they will stiffle your growth. * On a serious note....Today is a glorious day.....ride the wave, but don't let it consume you....you need your strength. It don't get easier from this point....it gets harder....or in your case....RAW-ER...LOL! *
For those of that want to see why the call her "pretty, but gritty"......I have an idea:

And if that isn't enough of an incentive to attend, there will be an open mic segment for all you MCs out there looking for a place to prove you got next. What attracts the Aquarian woman........ |
If you are in love with a woman in this zodiac be prepared to be very happy or be very sorry. She is a very busy person with her own matters similar to a guy in this zodiac. She is able to live by herself without any guy in her life, a very strong person indeed. * Not because she does not have a dream guy, but if she can not find such person, so what. She thinks she could do anything that a man can do. She is a leader , a real confident type. * She likes to do things by herself, such as serving herself and opening the door herself. Because she thinks waiting for a helping hand is a waste of time, she is not patient enough to wait around for that. If she starts to ask you out, do not think she is flirting with you, but rather because she thinks it is a waste of time to wait for you to be the one who asks. * She likes a COOL guy who sometimes acts like he is ignoring her, so he has a chance to show her his own confident. She like to guess her man's reaction, but at the same time likes to have many men wanting her. * She is a daring type who could do just about everything different from other people in her same society. She dares to fight for what she thinks belongs to her. Even though she acts confident, she mostly feels lonely and alone. If she breaks up with someone, she won't show any emotion even though deep down inside there is pain and agony. She won't be down for long though, she will come back to be the cheery and merry person again, because she looks at the world positively and has "Faith" in the word "Love". * She has more men friends than women friends, so do not be a jealous type if you date her. She could be slightly jealous, but hates a jealous guy. She loves "Freedom" so before and after marriage, her freedom has to be the same. She likes you to trust her, even if she does not trust you. * She likes to be the one who is "Right", so if you argue with her, let her win if it is not a big deal for you in that subject. She is a straight forward type, so if she does not love you anymore, she will just tell you straight to your face. Her love and relationships are always real, so if she says "It's over" be prepared to leave, she is not testing you. * She is not a vulnerable type, so you do not have to worry about her, she will survive by herself. If she is with you when you get sick, she will certainly take care and look after you, even if looking after you means a "small loan". Do not have secrets with her, she hates it and it really can piss her off badly. When she is sad, be understanding. When she is happy, be happy with her, she likes that. * You will not get bored with this type of girl. Someone who is close to her will know that deep down beneath that confident and cold hearted person, she is just as fragile as any woman. She is a fun and talkative person and she likes to tease you. Do not let her talk alone, if you do she will leave. * She has many types of jobs because she believes, "what a man can do, I can do". If you want her to work for you, forget it. When she is in love, she will leave her job in the day time just to come to see you, but before long she will go back to work seriously again. Prepare to live and love with a "Working Woman" then you will be OK. * If she mad, find a shelter for the "Hurricane" is here! Her bad temper will last very shortly though. She is not a revenge type and will not think of "pay back" time. Most people might think of her as "One of the guys", but in fact she is a 100% woman. She is easily hurt, so be nice with her. If she really loves you, then you are lucky because she is an honest, truthful and will never bored you. Understand that sometimes she will be over confident and sometimes like to have power or act bossy. * disregard the typos....I jacked this from another blogger ....and it was translated to English |

I'm really hankering for a 40 |
"The new research, reported in latest issue of the *Journal of Studies on Alcohol*, doesn*t settle the issue of whether rap changes the way the listeners act, or whether they*re drawn to the music because of their outlook on life. However, one specialist in teenage behaviour said it does raise important questions. *A link between rap music and aggressive behaviour is certainly plausible, particularly for males,* said Ralph DiClemente, a professor of public health at Emory University. The new research was inspired by previous findings that suggested young people drink more alcohol - malt liquor in particular - because rap stars promote it, said study author Meng-Jinn Chen, a researcher at the Pacific Institute for Research & Education*s Prevention Research Centre, in Berkeley, California. "
At first glance, the excerpt was funny as hell...." malt liquor in particular" ...then I thought this must be old as hell...so I go back and check the date Saturday, April 29, 2006 [<------ click to read full article]...oh wow...then it got serious. The above is from the Daily Times, a Pakastani online "News site". Its byline is, " Your Right to know.... A new voice for a new Pakastan"......WOW! I am not sure how much rap music they listen to....but I haven't heard any one talk about drinkin a 40 in a min. he he! or maybe that's some Cali ish. I know that they get music late over seas...... maybe Doggystyle just dropped? Seriously tho.....take a minute and think of the implications of this picture being painted of hip hoppers. It's scary! The region is already tense [particularly where America is concerned]. Plus, what about our troops...many of whom are products of the Hip Hop generation.....I wonder if they are impacted by this type of information being spread. What is happening? What kind of evil is underway? I've always said it....you can't tell me Puffy ain't cost Kerry the election. * Check out 40ounces.org There mission is to " spread the love of Malt Liquor across the globe". LOL! wow...& Hip Hop is the problem???? Check out this site too for fun....malt liquor really packs a wallop. 8% alcholic content- That has got to burn! Have you ever watched a person down a 40??? Amazing...... Sounds like a ghetto olympics category! * |

B.S.O.G. Pt 1 - Feedback |
Bosslady & H.O.P. present Baltimore State of Grind: 21 Different Ways Pt.1, the newest mixtape from Baltimore's hardest working lady on the Hip Hop scene. The mixtape offers 21 different perspectives on Baltimore life from 18 of the region's fastest rising stars. * Standouts include: Amadaye's "Late at Night" - This song seems so real to me - almost like a documentary. Maybe its Denise Koch's (WJZ-13) voice within the track that makes it feel real Baltimore-ish....or perhaps it's the beat - which by the way is CRAZY...or maybe the incredibly vivid story he tells....NOT sure, but this track is definitely a winner! * Born King's " Blue Lights" - I'd wrote about this song some time ago. It was included on his 3 song sampler, "Bornified King". This is the first time I heard any of our artists really speak on the blue lights in the city. I think the beats hot and I think B K really put alot of his soul into this song. * Ogun's "Baltimore Baby" - I must like it ALOT....I named my blog after it !!! * Ray Lugar ft Low Key God - "Baltimore Blocks" - This was one of the few mixtape joints on the CD....and I usually shy away from shout out songs....but I enjoyed this one. It was especially funny to hear Low Key hollaring in the background. * Unreal - "Baltimore State of Mind" - I think this is a great song. The guitars really give it a "Man on his Harley" kinda feel -Unreal's the lone desparado. This artist has really blossomed over that last year. Looks like he fell back for a minute, got his mind and material right and is now back to state his purpose. I recently listened to some of his newer material and I must say....folk need to start mentioning this guy's name when asked, "Who's hot in B'More?" * Can't lie....Diablo's Jail Flick is a song that had to grow on me. Sure, I thought it was catchy from the jump, but I wasn't convinced that it was a song I could see me dancing too....I kept having visions of the " Eagle Club" scene in Police Academy. LOL! but a year later......after several heated discussions about the song and after hearing it sooo ooooooo many times that I can hear the hook without singing it aloud....I NOW think this is a really cute song. I also think that kids and ex-cons alike will love it!! I would suggest that it be pushed further. It doesn't sound dated yet and the production was on point. I wouldn't waste it. * C.O.M.P.'s "B'more Anthem" - I love this guy's perspective! * Bossman's "Oh" - Baltimore City Anthem fo sho! * Huli Shallone's song, "It's Bmore" really put a smile on my face. The singer on this joint was amazing!!! * I couldn't include every song on this list because either a) I really thought the song was ok, but it didn't immediately grab me or b) wasn't the best I know these people have to offer or c) I've seen the song performed or have heard it on too many other mixtapes to really get excited anymore * b) was true in the case of Brown F.I.S.H. & M.O.L. c) was the case with Mully's "Oh Baltimore" a) goes for everything else! * The VERY COOL cover art is Kelly's handy work! VERY NIIICE!!!! That lady is so multi-talented. * Overall...I think this is a solid project. Please note: My opinion should to be taken with a grain of salt due to the amount of music I get ALONE. BUT....much of this material will be brand new to the average listener/fan .....& that's the beauty of it. If you are looking for a good music sampling...a one stop Baltimore Hip Hop shopping experience...this is a great buy! I am really looking forward to B.S.O.G. Pt 2. * P.S. Big Ups to Young Star aka Young Bullie of the Realside crew (G-LOC, THUNDER & MIKE KEL'S) & Mr. Whitefolks (D.C.) who both tore it down along with the other featured artists at the CD Release Party held last Tuesday @ Club 429. |
